Issues on Bladder Problems
& Incontinence by Dr. Birken
Millions of American women suffer
from some form of bladder problems and/or incontinence
creating billions of dollars spent on this health condition.
Unfortunately, few women seek medical help, and consequently,
live with a significantly compromised quality of life.
Testing includes the simple office evaluation of urodynamics
that involves a 15-20 minute office visit that yields, over
90% of the time, diagnoses that can provide a treatment
protocol for the individual and her specific condition or
conditions. The testing is virtually painless, does not
require any sedation or anesthetic, and is well tolerated
while providing immediate information needed in order to
process a management plan. Patients can return to work or
home free of any restrictions. Since it is considered
diagnostic, urodynamic testing is usually covered by most
insurance companies
Treatment
options include pelvic exercises, time voiding drills, and
the use of pessaries as a nonsurgical approach for pelvic
relaxation. Today, there are newer medications for overactive
bladder and urge incontinence that are effective and safe with
minimal side effects. Surgical options are numerous with many
procedures performed by endoscopic techniques that allow
easier postoperative courses with faster recoveries. Our staff
is compassionate and attentive to the woman who suffers from a
condition that can be both physically and emotionally
compromising.
