Élan Medspa to Purchase Titan
Cutera’s new infrared skin tightening device, Titan, will become a
new service offered by Élan Medspa.
“This technique can tighten facial as well as abdominal tissue
without the down time, pain, or expense of surgery,” Dr Birken said.
“Along with laser genesis and intense pulse light, patients will
attain a healthier, younger, and more refreshed look without
incisions or sutures.”

Dr. Birken was asked by Cutera to become a trainer for other
clinicians. Recently, he completed an intense course at Cutera’s
headquarters in San Francisco.
Titan is virtually painless and takes about an hour to perform for
the face and longer for other parts of the body. Usually, two to
three sessions are required and most patients see immediately
effects.

PMS Update
Premenstrual Syndrome is a constellation of physical as well as
emotional and behavioral changes that increase during the luteal, or
second half, of the menstrual cycle. Symptoms must be severe and
include at least five changes in mood, tension, and irritability
with interference of social function. Twenty percent of
reproductive-aged women report significant symptoms and around five
percent experience severe symptoms.
Hormones levels play a role, but not specific levels. Estrogen
and progesterone effect serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter.
Treatment includes diet changes with smaller meals and foods high
in complex carbohydrates and reduction in fat, sugar, salt, and red
meat. Caffeine can increase breast tenderness during this phase.
Aerobic exercise and relaxation techniques are helpful.
Over the counter preparations include calcium, Vitamin E,
magnesium, chaste tree berry, and anti-inflammants such as ibuprofen
or naproxen.
Prescriptions of spironolactone, a diuretic, may decrease breast
tenderness, swelling, irritability, depression, and food craving.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) cause major reduction
in physical as well as psychological symptoms. Alprazolam may be
helpful, as well as monophasic oral contraceptives.
