He completed his specialty training in Ob/Gyn at Baylor College of Medicine and served as chief resident at both Jefferson Davis Hospital and Ben Taub General Hospital. In 1989, Dr. Birken completed a preceptorship in Urogynecology at the University of California, 
Irvine. He has been in private practice in the 1960 area since 1980 and has also served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Birken has had publications in Archives of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, OB-GYN News, and the Journal of Graduate Liberal Studies. He has given many presentations on urinary incontinence and hormone replacement therapy, and has been a guest lecturer for the Tulsa Obstetrics and Gynecology Society.

Recently, he completed graduate school and received his Master's of Liberal Arts degree from Houston Baptist University. He is planning to teach medicine and literature on a part time collegiate level and hopes to complete a book on famous physician writers.

Dr. Birken has three sons, is an avid sports and fitness enthusiast, amateur radio operator, and a believer in healthy nutrition and appropriate vitamins and natural products supplementation.

Staff Bio's

Lynett Vavra is our Receptionist who schedules appointments, collects insurance information and checks in all patients. Lynett will also be the person from our office that contacts our patients to remind them of their appointments and to schedule annual exams. She is also responsible for assisting with the insurance verification for office visits. Lynett is married and the mother of 2 children. After graduating from high school she successfully completed 2 college courses in cosmetology and medical office reception. She has worked in the past for a worldwide courier service and as a dental assistant. She enjoys helping others and looks forward to a long lasting career in the medical field.

Rochelle Blosl is a certified Medical Assistant with eleven years experience in the healthcare field. She assists Dr. Birken with exams, vital signs, prescription refills, and patient telephone calls. Rochelle assists Dr. Birken with Urodynamics, office procedures, surgery cases and hospital rounds. Her clinical duties also include scheduling surgeries and contacting patients with test results. Prior to joining the practice, Rochelle held various positions in physician offices including the specialties of podiatry and otolaryngology.

Lizette Amador is a certified Medical Assistant who recently graduated from National Institute of Technology. Lizette successfully completed her internship at the Houston Cancer Clinic for Dr. Choksi. She assists Dr. Birken with Urodynamics, office procedures and takes patient’s vital signs. Lizette's duties include obtaining the insurance pre-certification and prior approval for procedures and surgeries performed by Dr. Birken.
